A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF, eng) or FAP (filtre à particules, fra) is a device of diesel engine exhaust system, that is designed to remove diesel particulate soot from the exhaust gases.
DPF system is installed on nearly all modern diesel cars nowadays starting from year 2000. The system is based on self-cleaning from accumulated soot by means of adding high exhaust heat into exhaust system. This process is called regeneration. When DPF gets clogged so that regeneration is not able to restore DPF flow, cars on-board diagnostic system will store fault condition, turn on malfunction indicator(s) and put engine electronics into safe / limp mode. Limp mode will reduce performance, but in most cases it will be possible to drive vehicle out of traffic or to workshop.
When this happens and there it`s not some of DPF system sensor fault, but clogged-up filter, there are 2 options to fix this problem:
- replacing DPF with new unit at dealership, that`s usually in the price range of 1000-2500 eur.
- removing DPF system completely (pricing info).
To disable DPF system it is very important to do mechanical filter removal along with ecu reprogramming. High quality of reprogramming is very important for disabling DPF functionality fully, to make system disable complete. About bad quality reprogramming You can read here. With professionally removed DPF system there will be no problems to pass MOT.
Usually for full DPF remove service we need up to whole workday. This will include diagnostics, high quality mechanical removal, ecu reprogramming and testing. If customer wants to make other programmings along with DPF removal, like EGR close or performance chiptuning, we can combine prices to package deal.
With DPF removal next advantages can be expected:
- relatively low-cost DPF problem solution
- no future DPF related problems (regeneration, DTC, limp mode, blocked DPF)
- restored / improved vehicle performance
- restored / improved fuel economy
- option to make stronger chiptuning
We are able to remove DPF completely from almost all cars, light commercial vehicles and some tractors as well.
